Run a local search (hill-climbing or simulated annealing) starting from Green's 60-comparator network: repeatedly try removing one comparator, or swapping/rerouting a pair of adjacent comparators, re-checking the 0-1 principle each time, to see if any single comparator is redundant or can be replaced by a shorter local pattern.
